Splash of this and a splash of that! June 5, 2012

I’m taking a quick break from a project that will be almost done soon because I just had a thought that I should share with you! (PS. I’ll be mostly FREE in 9 days!! Whooppieeeee!!!)

Now, we’ve all heard that we should drink 8 glasses of water a day right? And no, this does not include coffee, some teas, or alcoholic beverages. (In fact, for every one of those you should try to drink at LEAST 1-2 extra glasses of water!)

So, drinking that amount of water seems a bit overwhelming. Plus, water just tastes a little bland or it has that “city water” taste! (Sorry, I grew up on well water…sooo much better!) With this hot weather we’ve got this season, we need to start getting our water intake increased a bit.

My suggestion to you, to encourage you to drink more water, is to put something in your water to “freshen” it up a bit and make it a little more yummy. Sliced cucumber, lemon, lime, strawberries, kiwi, or a little squirt of vanilla extract…something non-artificial and not sugary. The possibilities are endless! Yes, it sounds like a luxury thing to do, but really…we need more water so why not give it a try!

And to some who need a little extra motivation…I’ve read that drinking water helps boost your metabolism (you can burn off your food and a little extra a little quicker)

Have a great week and enjoy the weather!!

Just quickly posting while I’m in the midst of a project to say, “Thanks for stopping in and checking this page out!” It makes me very excited to see that people are still checking in on my blog to see what’s going.

I haven’t posted in a while but I feel as though these past 4 weeks and coming 3 weeks will be the busiest and the last of my school life.

Bear with me, I will be back soon!!

…This one’s for YOU! (Finally….a Tip!) March 26, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emilee Thiessen @ 9:49 pm

So….is anyone like me where EVERYTHING they do throughout the day is front of them?  What I mean is…as I’m sitting here in front of the computer, I have my arms out in front of me in order to type.  I sit and study with stuff in front of me and I lean forward to read it.  I do the dishes – yup! In FRONT!!

Is that YOU TOO???

If so, I have a great tip for you!  With everything done in front of us, it makes our chest muscles (pectoralis major) short and tight.  Imagine a string going across your chest and attached at each shoulder.  Now, imagine that string getting pulled forward in an effort to make it shorter.   Your shoulders come forward and rounded.  These muscles are just some of the ones keeping us from being able to draw our shoulders back and to keep them there!

So what do we do with short muscles???  We STRETCH!

I have attached a video that demonstrates how to stretch your pecs.

But first, a few important things to remember:

- Only apply a stretch when your muscles are warm.  Evening is the best time, or after a warm shower….just don’t stretch when you first get up in the morning.

- Don’t stretch into pain – meaning only stretch until you feel a LIGHT DISCOMFORT that feels like a stretch. Don’t stretch so far that it cause you pain, essentially you are ripping your muscles apart causing strains and scar tissue.

- Hold your stretch for 30 seconds.  This is the time researched that allowed the greatest benefit and change in muscle length.  One 30 second stretch is better than two 15 second stretches or one minute long stretch.

- Don’t forget to breathe as you stretch!  As we exhale, it triggers a relaxation effect that allows our muscles to lengthen and let go of the tension!

Enjoy the video!

Rolling Up the Sleeves

Filed under: Uncategorized — Emilee Thiessen @ 9:08 pm

School for me runs like the highschool calendar, meaning, I’m on Spring Break! Most people would say, “Alright! Time to relax and do nothing!!” I say, “Oh my! Here it comes!” as I watch the tidal wave of things on my to do list get longer and longer.  This is my time  get ahead on some assignments, but mostly to catch up on all the assignments I haven’t had the pleasure of getting to because of how busy my schedule has been….mainly…BUSINESS (*read in a “doomful” voice*)…sorry Chris F. if you’re reading this, it wasn’t intentional at all! I promise!

This business project really is called a “Dream Project.” Create your dream business for your massage therapy business and make a business plan.  How do you want to stand out in your community?  How do you plan on being successful?  What is important to you when dealing with clients?  Simple. Right? NOPE! That’s okay though! That’s how we grow and challenge ourselves to delve into who we want to come as massage therapists and business people in the community! A little bit of wrestling can go a long way!

I realize that this project is a dream goal but I’m trying it to be representative of who I am and would like to be as a therapist.  I am a very family oriented person so my dream project is to eventually work out of my own home so that I can have a flexible schedule when we have the pitter-patter of little feet in the house! (Please no rumours…I am not currently pregnant!)

When I started at this school, I was a little scared of what lay before me.  What kind of things will I be learning?  Will I be able to apply what I’m learning to actually HELP people?  Will people like my touch as therapist?  How long will it take before I can feel these muscle fibers!?  Am I ready to go out into the “real” world and start treating people and making a difference?  It seemed very overwhelming, but you learn to crawl before you learn to walk, and you learn to walk before you learn to run.  Everything comes in bite sized pieces that are manageable.  I LOVE what I have learned so far and what I have yet to learn in AND out of the classroom!  This has been such an incredible journey of learning and struggle for me.  This scary decision has been a fantastic one!

So, may I encourage anyone, who is thinking about getting into something – whether it be learning something new, trying to start a new business, or anything else that may seem scary or overwhelming to begin with….someone I know, and I too, believe that “you can’t roll of your sleeves and wring your hands at the same time!”

Time to Roll up the sleeves with this project and get it going!!  Good luck with yours!

Happy Pi Day, everyone!  I thought this would be a great and perfect day to begin my first blog ever.  No, I’m not a mathemetician, but I do appreciate celebrating days like this!

I am studying massage therapy right now, soon to graduate (3 more months!) and LOVING IT.  There is endless knowledge about the human body and it is SOOO fascinating.  This is the world at my fingertips!

On this blog, I plan on putting up little tidbits of useful information about your body – maybe some great stretches or who knows maybe stuff about life! That’s all part of the blogging adventure!  Hopefully, you will find something useful and enjoy reading!

That’s it for now.  I must go and practice my soon-to-be career!

Reading!
